Non-profit Organizations, Trade Associations and Public-Private Partnerships

Everett, Gaskins, Hancock & Stevens, LLP provides a wide array of services to a diverse group of non-profit organizations, trade associations, public-private partnerships and advocacy groups concerned with such varied matters as public education, economic development, press freedom, taxation, entrepreneurial incentives, travel and tourism, biotechnology, aquaculture, health care and open government. The firm assists these clients with initial organization and incorporation; applications for tax-exempt status; strategic planning; general legal counseling; association management and training; and lobbying. We also help non-profit organizations resolve numerous other challenges that require non-legal solutions and outside-the-box thinking, including design of management structure, fund-raising, and mission definition.

Gerry Hancock, the partner in charge of this practice, has extensive experience in organizing leading and counseling non-profit organizations, and lobbying for them in the General Assembly (see Legislative Representation). He served as the founding chairman of the North Carolina Center for Public Policy Research, the North Carolina Public School Forum and the North Carolina Biotechnology Center. He helped organize, and served as vice chair of, the Rural Economic Development Center. He has served as co-chair of the General Assembly's Study Commission on Biotechnology; executive director of the North Carolina Commission on the Bicentennial of the United States Constitution; and vice chair of the North Carolina Board of Ethics. As vice chair of the NC Partnership for Schools and Roads he helped spearhead a $1.8 billion bond issue campaign. He has served on the boards of numerous other non-profit organizations, the Commission on the Future of the Community College System and the Advisory Committee to the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation.

In addition to Mr. Hancock, EGHS attorneys Ashley Matlock Perkinson, Hugh Stevens, Amanda Martin and Michael Tadych participate in this practice.
