The firm's heritage includes at least two predecessor firms: Everett & Everett, founded in Durham, North Carolina, at the beginning of the Twentieth Century; and Sanford & Cannon, formed by former North Carolina Governor and U.S. Senator Terry Sanford and Hugh Cannon, a member of Governor Sanford's administration. Everett and Everett was the long standing firm created by R.O. Everett (1878-1971) and his wife, Kathrine R. Everett (1893-1992). The Everetts are not only an integral part of the firm's culture but were also instrumental in the growth and development of The Triangle region in North Carolina. Robinson Everett, the Everetts' son, is of counsel to the firm. Robinson is a longtime professor at Duke University's School of Law. Robinson served as the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Military Appeals from 1980 until 1990 and is an expert on national security matters. Sanford & Cannon was formed in 1965 by Governor Sanford and Hugh Cannon at the end of Governor Sanford's tenure. Hugh Cannon was Governor Sanford's chief of staff. Hugh was also a nationally known parliamentarian and the author of Cannon's Concise Guide to Rules of Order (Houghton Mifflin Company 1995). He served as official parliamentarian for numerous labor unions and trade associations for decades and served as of counsel to the firm until his death. The firm's more recent lineage includes the addition of adept lawyers from the North Carolina law firms Merritt, Wooten & Janvier, Parker Poe Adams and Bernstein and the Georgia firm Dow, Lohnes & Albertson. In addition, the firm enjoys the knowledge and skills of lawyers and staff with diverse work experience including accounting, banking, broadcasting, business, journalism, public relations, tax and securities regulation.
